Summary

Centuries before the events of A Game of Thrones, House Targaryen--the only family of dragonlords to survive the Doom of Valyria--took up residence on Dragonstone。 Fire & Blood begins their tale with the legendary Aegon the Conqueror, creator of the Iron Throne, and goes on to recount the generations of Targaryens who fought to hold that iconic seat, all the way up to the civil war that nearly tore their dynasty apart。

What really happened during the Dance of the Dragons? Why was it so deadly to visit Valyria after the Doom? What were Maegor the Cruel's worst crimes? What was it like in Westeros when dragons ruled the skies? These are but a few of the questions answered in this essential chronicle, as related by a learned maester of the Citadel and featuring more than eighty all-new black-and-white illustrations by artist Doug Wheatley--including five all-new illustrations exclusive to this edition。 Readers have glimpsed small parts of this narrative in such volumes as The World of Ice & Fire, but now, for the first time, the full tapestry of Targaryen history is revealed。

With all the scope and grandeur of Gibbon's The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, Fire & Blood is the the first volume of the definitive two-part history of the Targaryens, giving readers a whole new appreciation for the dynamic, often bloody, and always fascinating history of Westeros。

Very good read。 The only reasons that I haven’t given it 5 stars is because it was a tad confusing due to the names being very similar; so it causes you to lose track at times。 I feel like some of this book has a lot of filler throughout, but even these parts remain somewhat entertaining。The most entertaining part of the book is without a doubt, The Dying of the Dragons, which has you hooked throughout。 As you read, you can see the pieces falling like dominoes, causing problem after problem for Very good read。 The only reasons that I haven’t given it 5 stars is because it was a tad confusing due to the names being very similar; so it causes you to lose track at times。 I feel like some of this book has a lot of filler throughout, but even these parts remain somewhat entertaining。The most entertaining part of the book is without a doubt, The Dying of the Dragons, which has you hooked throughout。 As you read, you can see the pieces falling like dominoes, causing problem after problem for this complex royal family。 4。4 Stars 。。。more

Finished just in time for the end of HOTD S1

I enjoyed reading this - it was a struggle to get through at some times, but the story is just so good。 I can’t believe I have to wait for the second half of the Targaryen history

Am a big fan of the Game of Thrones TV show, and read the first two books of ASOIAF, but got sidetracked。 Picked this book up having started the HotD show, and cannot recommend this book enough。 So enjoyable!

Awful, gave up。 There’s just so much with zero story, no characters or plot or interaction。 Just a list of This person was King, these people agreed to fight with them, x married y there children were a and b who grew up to be …… for 27 hours in an audio book。 Nah sorry I totally don’t see the point at all, in him writing and publishing this or for anyone to read it。

Though this is not a novel, but rather a history, it is nonetheless a compelling read。 I do miss the strong POV characters of the Song of Ice and Fire novels, but the limited semi-omniscient historian narrator gives the reader a good sense of the uncertainty of history, always comparing alternative accounts of events from different source historians。 And one of those, Mushroom, a dwarf jester turned historian, reminds the reader of Tyrion in his wilder moods。 The 135-year summary narrative is pe Though this is not a novel, but rather a history, it is nonetheless a compelling read。 I do miss the strong POV characters of the Song of Ice and Fire novels, but the limited semi-omniscient historian narrator gives the reader a good sense of the uncertainty of history, always comparing alternative accounts of events from different source historians。 And one of those, Mushroom, a dwarf jester turned historian, reminds the reader of Tyrion in his wilder moods。 The 135-year summary narrative is peppered with plenty of detailed anecdotes to keep the reader‘s interest。 Of course there‘s not time to dive deep into many of the historical characters, and there‘s no inner monologues at all, but the reader does get a feel for some of these personalities and their conflicts。All in all, I enjoyed it and would recommend it for any fan of the novel series or the TV series。 It provides a colorful background to the families found there。I read this in parallel with a reread of The Silmarillion, both also in parallel with the respective TV series, just to get a feel for the differences。 I have to say that I really enjoyed this more than Tolkien‘s history and the same goes for the TV series derived from both of them。 Despite being a long time Tolkien fan, I can now appreciate the revolution that Martin created in fantasy: good vs。 evil is too simple - it is much better to have many characters with shades of gray, leaving room for intrigues, machinations, etc。One last comment: the paperback version i read had an interview with Martin at the back which was very illuminating about his creative process and decisions made in prioritizing which books to finish when。 Also worth a read for fans of the unfinished Fire and Ice series。 。。。more

I enjoyed this book and was glad to get back into the Game of Thrones world。 I thought it would show me what was going to happen in the House of the Dragon show, but the show really strays from the book, which is fun because you get two tales。 I just really wish Mr。 Martin would list fewer characters who never show up again as he's telling his stories, which are wonderful。 I enjoyed this book and was glad to get back into the Game of Thrones world。 I thought it would show me what was going to happen in the House of the Dragon show, but the show really strays from the book, which is fun because you get two tales。 I just really wish Mr。 Martin would list fewer characters who never show up again as he's telling his stories, which are wonderful。 。。。more

Death of dragons’ part was a pure disaster。 Also I bowled my eyes out over basically a history text book like wtf 😂

Good to have the backstory behind this dynasty。。。

The first 450 pages had me gripped! The last 150 not so much, but my review is a little closer to 3。5 than 4z I would 100% reread the first 3/4 over straight away。 The history around Aegon the conqueror was so interesting but I feel the level of excitement dipped after the Dance with Dragons section。 Really hope we get another to read the rest of the history up to the mad king

I was going to give this two stars because, in theory, this is a pretty neat book。However, even listening to the audiobook was just as rough as when I tried to read a physical copy。 I wanted to quit halfway through but then the Dance of Dragons section started and by the time that was over, I was so far in I figured I might as well just suck it up。I would suggest just reading a wiki page about whichever characters you're interested in。 It was significantly less tedious。 I was going to give this two stars because, in theory, this is a pretty neat book。However, even listening to the audiobook was just as rough as when I tried to read a physical copy。 I wanted to quit halfway through but then the Dance of Dragons section started and by the time that was over, I was so far in I figured I might as well just suck it up。I would suggest just reading a wiki page about whichever characters you're interested in。 It was significantly less tedious。 。。。more

A very good story for people who enjoy the GOT lore, or want to know the differences between the book and the show。 The fact that we get no first person POV chapters gives it a mysterious character, like in the end we don't know what details are canon and which are not, and I find that pretty cool。 The one thing I didn't like is that the narration becomes too fast after the Dance, but overall is an interesting novel。 A very good story for people who enjoy the GOT lore, or want to know the differences between the book and the show。 The fact that we get no first person POV chapters gives it a mysterious character, like in the end we don't know what details are canon and which are not, and I find that pretty cool。 The one thing I didn't like is that the narration becomes too fast after the Dance, but overall is an interesting novel。 。。。more

Great fictional history of the Targaryen family。 I thoroughly enjoyed going back into Westeros and discovering how the Targaryen family ruled。 I do hope that GRRM does more history books about this incredible fantasy world。 Would love to see him write one about the Doom of Valyria and the history of the First Men。 Great read。

The new tv-series brought back a hunger for more information on this world that I hadn't felt since GoT season 5 or 6, which allowed me to eat up the history told in this book and go through it in a relatively short time。 Especially when the book got around to the Dance of the Dragons-material it had me firmly in its grasp。 I think the greatest strength of GRRM is that he grounds his world in realism, with every action having a reaction and every misstep having a consequence, while at the same t The new tv-series brought back a hunger for more information on this world that I hadn't felt since GoT season 5 or 6, which allowed me to eat up the history told in this book and go through it in a relatively short time。 Especially when the book got around to the Dance of the Dragons-material it had me firmly in its grasp。 I think the greatest strength of GRRM is that he grounds his world in realism, with every action having a reaction and every misstep having a consequence, while at the same time giving his characters very cathartic and fully realised arcs。 When a character is in the end punished for their evildoings or mistakes, tragic as it may be, it feels just as earned and satisfying as when a character beats the odds to come out victorious。 And every time it still seems to affirm the harshness of reality。 Not a 5 star-review, because a lot of my engagement with the story came from wanting to know about the Dance and it declined rapidly in the final chapters dealing with the aftermath。 From Aegon's Conquest up to the Old King I was engaged because it set the stage for the Dance but the aftermath felt less urgent and by then I started to feel the tedium of the history lesson。 Still, for the points listed above: a great dive in this amazingly elaborate fictional world。 。。。more

I haven't stepped into the world of Ice and Fire for a long time, but decided to read it should the show decide to diverge to far。 It was a fun read and mostly enjoyable, some chapters were a drag and sometimes the explanations are hilarious or ridiculous。 I'm certain though, should the second part come out anytime, I'd read it immediately。 I haven't stepped into the world of Ice and Fire for a long time, but decided to read it should the show decide to diverge to far。 It was a fun read and mostly enjoyable, some chapters were a drag and sometimes the explanations are hilarious or ridiculous。 I'm certain though, should the second part come out anytime, I'd read it immediately。 。。。more

This was such a good book! I never thought that a book that was written like a history book would be so interesting, but that's the magic of George R。 R。 Martin! Not my cup of tea… written like a history book, this story lacks the basic ingredients to make a book enjoyable。 It’s extremely long, dry and confusing。 The story itself could be fascinating and the book fun to read if told properly - like we’re used from GRRM in ASOIAF。 Also, I don’t understand why it’s necessary to use sexual violence as often and graphically as it’s done here。

Okay, first time reading GRRM with an age to actually understand his books and to not leave them at page 200。 I must say I really enjoyed this book。I was never a big Targaryen fan before the House of the Dragon show, they never really interested me but oh my god now they have turned into my second favorite house of this universe。 Really enjoyed the book, specially the female characters like Visenya, Alysanne, Rhaenys the queen who never was and Rhaenyra。 The conquest part is really really intere Okay, first time reading GRRM with an age to actually understand his books and to not leave them at page 200。 I must say I really enjoyed this book。I was never a big Targaryen fan before the House of the Dragon show, they never really interested me but oh my god now they have turned into my second favorite house of this universe。 Really enjoyed the book, specially the female characters like Visenya, Alysanne, Rhaenys the queen who never was and Rhaenyra。 The conquest part is really really interesting, as is the reign of Jaehaerys and Alysanne, and I wish we could see those stories adapted one day。My favorite part was obviously the Dance of Dragons, I love how it’s written, how grey all the characters are (which is something that in the show is poorly represented, make Alicent and Rhaenyra ambitious!!) and how at the end there’s not a clear winner to it。 The misogyny though is something that really pissed me off towards the whole book, I knew it was here cause I’m familiar with the show but still really pissed me off, you write a universe with dragons but draw the line at women being treated with respect because it is not historically accurate?? be serious。There was also some parts, specially battles that were kind of hard to follow, and I was really distracted and confused and didn’t know what exactly was going on。All in all GRRM surprised me with this to be honest, i thought it would be much harder to follow and more dense, and i really wish we get a part two with the rest of this dinasty’s story 。。。more

Ah! This book is brilliant! It’s so clever and so much fun to read。 The style and pace and detail of this entirely fictional history is so impressive and I kept marvelling at just how good a write Martin is。 Unlike the Song of Ice & Fire books, you don’t need to flick to complex genealogies and maps。 The detailed names are fun but don’t really matter in the scheme of things。 I loved every sentence of this book and wish the second volume was out。
